Gena McDonald-Developing Butterflies-Your Winning Season
Friday Feb 01, 2019
Friday Feb 01, 2019
A powerful interview with Gena McDonald, founder of Developing Butterflies Big Sister Program.
Gena McDonald, founder of Developing Butterflies Big Sister Program, established April 6, 2016 born in Dayton and a graduate of Dayton Public Schools, is a mother of two (a son and a daughter), holds a Bachelor degree in Applied Behavioral Science and is very passionate about helping young ladies or "little sisters" be confident in who they are to overcome their obstacles. She didn’t have a bad life, but growing up with three parents on drugs and with the three main women in her life victims of domestic violence, she was already considered a statistic to repeat her environment.
Gena wasn’t involved in any mentoring or big sister program but realized that if she had a mentor or big sister, she could have made some better choices sooner-than-later, which is how Developing Butterflies came about; giving back what she didn’t have! She wanted to provide a program where little sisters could come be themselves and build strong, lasting relationships, while receiving support and guidance.

The women of We Be (Women Embracing Better Efforts) discuss African American Women Issues-Are we better off now than during the civil rights movement? Of course we've made significant progress, and we can celebrate many acheivements. In our private conversations we discussed the following:
Economic Disparities of African American Women-Are we better off now than during the civil rights movement? 1) What is being done to ensure all women are able to adequately provide for themselves and their families? This could include the local work of community organizations to address poverty, and the affects of it like infant mortality, political engagement. (We all work to address these issues) 2) Are African American women judged too harshly and our issues not taken seriously by our local government? Is there room for growth and collaboration to create more opportunities for women of color? 3) How can we use the framework of Transformative Justice to make connections to create continuous change and opportunities? We Be discusses how we can use our experiences and our voices that creates lasting change in our community.
Special guest Darsheel Kaur, restorative justice practitioner, creative, youth advocate, and community builder assists with shaping our conversation to connect the dots and assist with idetifying ways we can continue to honor the legacy of those before us and walk in the path destined for us. Powerful discussion to encourage women to make their own contributions to bring about healing and transformation in our communities.
